My internship at Poston Communications has taught me more than I ever could have imagined. As an intern, I feel that my duties were varied, educational and empowering. I felt constantly challenged with helping clients land placements, drafting public relations materials, and participating in firm management projects. Looking back, it’s difficult to recall everything I have taken in and accomplished over the past summer, but I feel that the lessons I’ve learned and the friendships I’ve formed are truly special.
What I’ve Learned:
- Don’t be afraid to lead: At Poston, we are encouraged to be authentic and to be ourselves. People are naturally attracted to authenticity and tend to follow one who inspires his or her team toward the achievement of a common goal, no matter the person’s position of power or amount of experience. Just because we’re interns, doesn’t mean we can’t be leaders.
- It’s OK to make mistakes: No one expects perfection 100 percent of the time. I learned the most from peer reviews and feedback on my work. Learning relies in large part on recognizing and then analyzing and fixing our mistakes.
- Change is good: Coming into this position, I felt nervous and unsure about the change that lay ahead. It’s intimidating to have to adjust to the working world, office culture and constant assignments all at the same time. However, I soon learned that the key to handling change is focusing on the positive that will inevitably come from any transition.
This internship has been one of the most rewarding and inspiring opportunities of my life. I never would have imagined how much I could learn and accomplish in such a short period of time. As I leave, I want to thank everyone here at Poston Communications who has contributed to my extraordinary experience this summer.
