Two PR internships at Poston Communications played a pivotal role in my decision to apply to law school. When I began my first Poston Communications internship last summer, I was considering law school among a few post-undergraduate options. My time as a Poston intern, where I continuously monitored current issues for law firms and other professional services clients, piqued my interest in the legal industry.
After my first summer internship with Poston, I returned to Rollins College to earn my undergraduate degree in international business. During my senior year, I completed the law school admissions process, enthusiastically deciding to attend the University of Tennessee College of Law. Recognizing the role my enriching experience with Poston Communications played in my commitment to law school, I happily returned for a second summer with Poston.
I am enjoying my second year as an intern even more than my first because now I can combine public relations experience with my expanding legal knowledge and fluency in legal terminology.
This summer I’ve had the opportunity to build on my previous experience and cultivate new skills that undoubtedly will serve me well as I pursue a career in the legal profession. These valuable skills include conducting research, analytical thinking, time management and legal-oriented writing.
I participate in calls with clients from across the country who discuss their practice areas. I carefully frame the facts to generate pitches for the media based on relevance to the current news cycle. These efforts often require a significant amount of research and analysis as I correlate the information to current events reporters are covering. Competency in research and analysis are fundamental attributes of legal professionals, and I have gained confidence in my ability to regularly employ these skills in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Additionally, during my summers at Poston, I’ve written numerous pitches, press releases and media alerts, which has helped me fine-tune my writing skills. Balancing several different pitches, press releases and other writing assignments could easily become overwhelming without the proper time management skills. The rigorous pace has set the tone for juggling many courses and assignments as a law student. Effective time management is vital to my success, and interning with Poston has helped hone my time management techniques.
I am grateful for the legal experience I have gained through Poston Communications’ summer internship program, and I am certain these skills will benefit me this fall as I enter the demanding environment of law school.
