The Poston Communications intern curriculum program has been invaluable in shaping my understanding of PR and its practices. I have found myself transformed professionally and prepared to take on a full-time position. Poston’s PRecision Curriculum pairs interns with senior members of the Poston team who walk through various topics pertaining to the best practices of PR skills, the internal methods and standards specific to Poston, as well as personal professional development.
The biggest thing I’ve learned in my time at Poston is how to effectively pitch stories to the media. I received expert advice on the best ways to approach reporters and get their attention. Although I had never pitched a story to a reporter before, I felt confident that I had a team of kind, intelligent individuals who would support me through the process. Having studied English in college, I was eager to learn a new way to challenge my language skills and play with words, and with the guidance of my account team, I learned to synthesize complex issues into readable, compelling content that resulted in key placements for our clients.
In all sectors of PR, professionals must implement creative, critical thinking to successfully navigate and guide their clients in the media space to catch the eyes of reporters. Working with clients in professional services presents unique obstacles for PR professionals but over time, I’ve learned how to make any topic work by crafting a thoughtful story. Language is the basis of all communication, and I have developed a skill for using it professionally for the sake of our clients, regardless of the industry in which they work. By watching the dedicated professionals at Poston, I’ve learned that there is nothing that can stop a determined PR pro from telling a client’s story.
I came into this position uncertain of what direction I wanted to take in my career, but after my time at Poston, I feel certain that my skills will take me down the right path.
