Attending an industry conference is a valuable opportunity for lawyers to expand their networks, showcase expertise and build relationships that support business development. To make the most of the investment, preparation and follow-through are just as important as showing up. This checklist offers a step-by-step guide to help attorneys plan strategically before the event, stay focused during it and maintain momentum afterward so that every conference delivers lasting benefits.
4–6 Weeks Before the Event
- Review event agenda for sessions, panels, and networking opportunities aligned with your practice and goals.
- Identify key goals for the event (e.g., meet 3 potential clients, reconnect with 2 former colleagues, attend a key industry speaker session).
- Request attendee list (if available) and highlight priority contacts: clients, prospects, alumni, referral sources.
- Research speakers and panelists—note questions or topics you can discuss with them.
- Coordinate with colleagues attending—decide on “divide and conquer” strategy for sessions, meals and networking.
- Arrange travel, hotel, and registration early to secure best options.
1–2 Weeks Before the Event
- Connect with priority contacts on LinkedIn or via email to suggest meeting at the event.
- Finalize session plan—prioritize events where your target contacts are likely to attend.
- Prepare conversation starters based on recent industry news, shared contacts or topics of mutual interest.
- Plan booth coverage (if applicable)—decide who will staff it, shifts and responsibilities.
- Confirm marketing materials and giveaways are ordered and shipped to venue (if applicable).
- Review dress code and pack accordingly, including business cards.
During the Event
- Arrive early to key sessions and networking events for easier introductions.
- Stick to your goals—quality over quantity in connections.

Within 48 Hours After the Event
