News: “By Supporting the Legal Food Frenzy, We Can Help 1.4M Hungry Neighbors in Georgia,” Daily Report

There is only one side in the fight against food insecurity—the official term for what people endure when they don’t know how they will obtain their next meal—and now is the time for lawyers and law firms to band together to raise funds for food banks throughout Georgia.

Over 26 years as a reporter and editor at the Daily Report, there was one story each year for which I gleefully abandoned journalistic objectivity—covering the Georgia Legal Food Frenzy.

There is only one side in the fight against food insecurity, the official term for what people endure when they don’t know how they will obtain their next meal. That is what makes participating in this annual event such a joy.

Attorneys and professionals who are trained and paid to argue against their opponents instead focus on friendly competition to see who can raise the most to help the estimated 1.4 million neighbors across the state who do not have enough to eat.

To better understand that figure, imagine filling Georgia’s Sanford Stadium (93,000), the Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium (75,000), Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium (52,000) and the Atlanta Braves’ Truist Park (42,000).

Those capacity crowds represent just 19% of the hungry people in our state. You’d need just over five of each venue for every hungry Georgian to have a seat.

One of the more striking facts about food insecurity is that 60% of people visiting Georgia food pantries have jobs, but they don’t make enough to pay for all of their essential needs, according to Feeding Georgia. Another fact to consider: 461,720 children (about five Sanford Stadiums) are hungry. Fortunately, the state’s food banks make it easy to help. Every $1 donation to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, for example, can provide enough food for three meals. Give $10, and you’ve bought dinner for 30 people. I challenge you to find a better deal.

Finally, the need is particularly acute now. The Legal Food Frenzy occurs each April because the food banks need to stock up for summer, when families who rely on school-associated meal services need more help than during the school year.

The program runs through Friday, April 25. To find or start a team, visit galegalfoodfrenzy.org.
