PR: APR Month: Investing in the Standard That Clients Deserve

In public relations, reputation is everything – for clients, organizations and the professionals shaping the story. The Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) designation highlights a clear standard for excellence, grounded in strategy, ethics and measurable impact. It’s more than a credential; it’s a benchmark for how communications should be practiced.

I pursued my APR to demonstrate and validate my commitment to that standard. The accreditation reflects a deep understanding of strategic communication, a dedication to ethical decision-making and a responsibility to approach every challenge with rigor and intention. In a competitive and fast-evolving field, it serves as a mark of distinction — not just of what we know but how we apply it in service to clients and the profession.

Where Strategy Meets Storytelling

Pursuing my APR gave me a framework to apply these standards in my day-to-day work, particularly in media relations, where reputation is the asset. My goal is not just to secure coverage but to communicate business priorities through clear, credible storytelling. Success in this space depends on more than strong messaging; it requires sound judgment, careful timing and a deep understanding of the stakes involved. Clients place real trust in the counsel behind the narratives that represent them, and that responsibility demands more than instinct or experience alone.

Earning my APR reinforced how I approach that responsibility. The process challenged me to think more critically and act more intentionally – grounding decisions in research, considering the full landscape of stakeholders and measuring impact, not just activity. It strengthened my ability to lead with strategy and uphold the ethical standards that define our profession.

From Execution to Strategic Counsel

One of the most meaningful shifts in a communications career is moving from tactical execution to strategic counsel. Pursuing the APR accelerated that shift for me. It sharpened the questions I ask at the outset of every engagement: What is the client trying to achieve? What does success look like, and how will we measure it? What risks might arise, and how should our communications strategy address them?

Those questions have made me a more effective partner to my clients, helping me provide clearer, more thoughtful guidance and ensuring that every recommendation is grounded in strategy, not just execution.

A Credential That Signals Commitment

In a field where there are many ways to build expertise, the APR offers a clear, independent standard. For me, earning it was about more than adding a credential – it was a way to demonstrate my commitment to the discipline, accountability and continuous growth the profession demands. It reflects the standard I strive to uphold every day in my work and the value I hope to pass on to the next generation of communicators.

Investing in the Profession’s Future

This April, I’m proud to celebrate not only the APR designation but also the next generation of communicators working toward it. Two of our PR interns, Ana Estevez and Mia Gluckman, are actively pursuing the PRSA Certificate in Principles of Public Relations, a credential designed for college students that helps build a strong professional foundation before entering the workforce.

APR Month also serves as a reminder of the responsibility we all share for strengthening the profession. Supporting emerging communicators like Ana and Mia is one concrete way to honor that responsibility. The habits, frameworks and professional standards they develop early in their careers will shape the quality and impact of their work for years to come – and reinforce the value of the standards the APR represents.

Upholding Standards, Inspiring the Next Generation

April is an opportunity to recognize those who have earned their APR, encourage those considering the path and invest in those just beginning theirs. For me, earning the APR was a way to validate the standards I strive to uphold every day – strategic thinking, ethical judgment and measurable impact in every engagement. In our field, the quality of communications counsel shapes real outcomes, and committing to that standard is essential. The APR offers a clear example of what excellence in communications looks like, and it’s a standard I am proud to uphold and pass on to the next generation of communicators.
